What's in Your Control?

We live in a world where sometimes everything feels out of our hands. You may be dealing with sickness, financial struggles, addiction, maintaining boundaries, understanding your identity, and finding people who support you; just to name a few. When there are many challenges along the way it can feel discouraging and impact the trust you have in yourself and others, your self-worth, and your view of the world overall.

I often talk to folks who express frustration and sadness about things outside their control. When this happens, I love using this simple chart to help understand what is in your control and out of your control. I encourage you to take a few minutes to complete this chart and think about where you are putting your time and energy. You are responsible for yourself and you create your reality. Are you spending a lot of time trying to change things outside of your control or are you investing time in yourself? Once you have a deeper understanding of what is in your control vs. out of your control, it allows you to grow, support yourself and others effectively, and let go of what no longer serves you.

If you are feeling stuck, revisit your chart and ask yourself, “Is what I'm trying to change in my control or out of my control?” If it is something that is in your control, keep thinking of strategies and techniques about how to change the situation. However, if it is something out of your control, I want you to take a moment and ask yourself these three questions:

Take some time to reflect on these questions. Below is an example of a chart I made demonstrating what is in my control and what is out of my control. These are just a few examples, some of which may vary depending on who you are. I encourage you to complete the blank chart above before looking at the completed chart below.
